The Apostle’s Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; AND IN JESUS CHRIST His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. WE BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.–AMEN. In brief, the Apostle’s Creed states our faith in– God the Father, Jesus Christ His only Son, The Holy Spirit, The Church, Forgiveness of Sins, The Resurrection, and Life Everlasting. In 1896, Peter Banks (great-grandfather of Mrs. Beatrice Edwards and Mrs. Janet Wallace) felt the need to organize a church for black people in Worthington. Mr. Banks and four men–James Burkhead, J.T. Horton, C.B. Kiner, and D.H. Taborn (uncle of Mrs. Mary Walker)–worked diligently to create a church home for black people. On September 24, 1897, a lot was purchased from Mrs. Millie Altston and a building was moved to the lot and converted into a church. The church was named Bethel AME Church. By 1914, the old church was too small and a new church at 682 Plymouth Avenue was built in Worthington by Mr. C.E. Hard, a local carpenter. The building was dedicated in 1914 and renamed St. John AME. In 2004 the church relocated to 7700 Crosswoods Drive Columbus, Ohio.
