Rev. Dr. Ruth McCants Locke was born in Sumter, South Carolina to Presiding Elder Robert L. McCants, Sr. and Maggie Herriott McCants. As a child she attended African Methodist Episcopal Churches in which her father pastored in Columbia, South Carolina while growing up with her siblings Dr. Sondra McCants Jones and Robert McCants, Jr.
Dr. Ruth McCants Locke earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Master of Arts Degree from South Carolina State University in Speech-Language Pathology. She went on to continue her education as a post-graduate student at Ohio State University in Adult Neurogenic Communication Disorders. Dr. Ruth McCants Locke continued her education to earn her Master’s Degree from Payne Theological Seminary. While a student at Payne she was blessed to serve as the student government president for two consecutive terms. She graduated from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio earning her Doctor of Ministry Degree in Christian Education and Urban Ministries. Her doctoral research focused on “Merging Technology and Traditional Teaching Methods as a Means of Reaching Generation X.”
Dr. Ruth McCants Locke is an ordained itinerate elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was formally the pastor of Shaffer Chapel AME Church (Cambridge, Ohio), Holy Trinity AME Church (Wilberforce, Ohio), St. Mark AME Church (Columbus, Ohio), and Zion AME Church (Delaware, Ohio). Most recently, Dr. Ruth McCants Locke was appointed to serve as the Accountant for the Third Episcopal District of the AME Church under the leadership of Bishop Errenous E. McCloud, Jr. She is the new pastor of St. John AME Church (Worthington, Ohio).
Dr. Ruth McCants Locke has been blessed to present the “Living Your Best Life Now Conference for Women” which started in 2006. This conference brings together phenomenal professional women to teach workshops that are designed to help other women make healthy choices and changes in their lives. Dr. Ruth McCants Locke has been honored to be a workshop leader and keynote preacher for various conferences. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Columbus Chapter of The Links, Incorporated where she has served as the Chaplin for many years, Strategic Planning Chair and currently serves as the Treasurer.
Dr. Ruth McCants Locke is blessed to have a wonderful supportive husband, Major Jim Locke III, who serves as a Chaplin for the Ohio National Guard. Chaplin Locke is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. They both enjoy international travel and spending quality time with friends and family. Dr. Locke and Chaplin Locke are blessed to have one son, Jimmie Logan Locke IV, who is 12 years old. Logan is in the seventh grade, loves technology, horseback riding, and is a member of the Westerville Athletic Club Swim Team. Dr. Ruth McCants Locke is a servant of God called to preach, teach, equip, and love.
